Ears are the most non geometric external feature of our face. But, nature also has methods to madness, and this is what makes us spot an abnormal looking ear. Anomalies of external ears come in many forms shape(s). One of them is the ‘BAT EARS’ which is nothing but unusually prominent ears when looking at the face from front on.

Is it a cause of deafness?
This is an aesthetic external ear condition with almost no known cause and connection whatsoever to hearing ability or the functioning of the rest of the ear.
What problems does it cause?
The problem is purely aesthetic; sometimes the prominence stands out and is unbelievably symmetrical giving the face a bat like appearance. This manifests as peer ridicule in school age resulting in social embarrassment and problems thereof.
In that case, what shall be done?
Well, when in deep waters, the way to go is to the shortest shore and not necessarily the way back to the start. Likewise, if your child faces this and its consequences, a surgical solution is invariably an easier fix.
Who can be of help?
Plastic surgeons can analyse your ear symmetry and the exact feature(s) which is the culprit behind such an appearance. This could be a combination of – ill formed anti tragus (ear fold), a deep ear cup and sometimes just an unusually large ear ( Stahl / ninja ear).
Each of these need to be tackled with specific surgical maneuvers to make the result look natural. Your plastic surgeon carves, trims and recreates the ear folds to correct your ear deformity.

What are the precautions to take?
It is advisable to wear a head band to keep the ears close to scalp for a few weeks to allow your ears to get used to its new position but most importantly to keep your ears safe from injury. Important thing to watch out for is keloid scarring, which is although is extremely rare but needs specialized therapy to combat its aesthetic downside.
As in all aesthetic surgeries, perfection is the perfect alignment of your expectations to surgical feasibility, therefore it is important to discuss your case individually with your plastic surgeon, and not to be driven or repelled by social media or non-professional opinions.
